The Challenge

  • Develop a cohesive family of collectible robot characters.

  • Create packaging that extends the toy experience.

  • Design a system that has multiple character variations.

  • Prototype the product and packaging as a physical experience.

The challenge was to develop a cohesive line of characters and engineer packaging that functioned both as protection and as an interactive storytelling device, transforming disposable materials into a piece of the product experience.

"An exploration of product design and packaging design, with the goal of creating a small line of collectible toys that felt intentional, durable, and production-ready,”

The Idea and Development

I originally set off to create a simple line of toy robots, but then decided to up the ante and add an interactive element to the packaging as well. What followed was an immersive toy system from the unboxing to the toy play, but it didn’t come without its iterations along the way.

Sketching & Prototyping

I sketched the look of each robot, and modeled them in Rhino 8 to establish precise measurements before moving into prototyping the toys with a 3D printer.

Refinement

Finally, the strongest direction was refined into a consistent system. Each robot had their own version of the packaging cover, but the overall packaging design remained the same. Each robot has their own unique look while remaining complimentary to the theme of the toy line.

By combining CAD modeling, rapid prototyping, and structural packaging design, the project demonstrates a complete workflow from concept through fabrication and showcases how thoughtful design can turn a simple toy into an immersive, story-driven experience.

Final Product

The final system translated the visual identity across product design, packaging, and promotional applications. This project reinforced the importance of designing a system rather than a single visual identity for cohesiveness, and recognition across channels.
